The Medium is the Message; Here’s The Message

The pagan Gospel of Hollywood and the Gospel of Jesus Christ could not be farther apart; yet there are some claiming the name of Christ and leading other blind prodigals into a spiritual pit, trying to force the two mutually exclusive gospels to co-exist.

Hollywood and media is poisoning the wellspring of American wisdom; ghettifying our cities and seducing our churches. The Church’s Gospel is one of faith without seeing resulting in hard work- the American work ethic, or the Christian or Protestant Work Ethic; the media’s gospel (television, beat-fetishism albums and itunes downloads; youtube, etc.) is the gospel of instant gratification (the “message” which is the “medium”(McLuhan)) a gospel which contradicts the gospel of salvation through faith by preaching (erroneously) that peace is obtained by seeing immediately as a way of evading the blessing of faith, which by definition requires not seeing; thinking; solitude, and of course reading the Word of God. Consume enough media for long enough, and of course, as history has proven, you won’t be able to read anything at all.

To state it another way: the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Word of God, is fundamentally opposed to the medium of television and its many iterations – digital cinema; smart phones and other “interactive televisions,” etc. Why? Because one can not simultaneously believe in the gospel of instant gratification (the message which is the medium) and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which unlike the television-viewing experience, requires a life repentance and resulting sacrifice and ultimately, resultant work from us. The difference cannot be clearer; one is a gospel whose fruit is hard work(faith without works is dead; and we recognize a good tree by its good fruit), the other sloth (which maketh poverty); one is a gospel of expressing authentic masculinity and femininity in marital procreation; the other is a gospel of homosexuality and other deviant male effeminacy; one is a gospel of real fellowship and love for one’s neighbor, being a good Samaritan who brightens the corner where one resides; the other is a gospel of virtual help and smiles and volunteering for misguided, ineffectual flights of whimsy which do not benefit mankind, but appropriate real relationships with the illusion of an interconnected, but actually anti-social, disconnected world lacking in authentic human relationships. And the differences are legion, beyond those few examples. Please contact me for further information, and some philosophical groundwork here is borrowed from media theorist Mr. Neil Postman. I already mentioned Marshall McLuhan, and former FCC Chairman Newton N. Minow (“Vast Wasteland”).
